King Martin I the Humane, the last count of Barcelona, acquired this property in 1408, which he called Bellesguard (beautiful view). The siteâs mediaeval past inspired GaudĂ to create this work at the midpoint between Modernisme and gothic.
The commission, entrusted by Maria Sagés i Molins, the widow of Jaume Figueras, involved renovating the remains of the old mediaeval palace and building the viaduct.
The stairwell, topped by a spire and crowned by the four-arm cross, is a particular highlight. The renovation notably included the use of local slate stone, reinforcing the buildingâs mediaeval past.
