Casa Batlló

1904-1906

In 1903, the textile industrialist Josep Batlló purchased a building made by Emili Sala i Cortés on Passeig de Gràcia to make it his home. He commissioned Antoni Gaudí for the project, who instead of demolished the building and building an entirely new house, decided on a complete overhaul.

The undulating surface of the façade, covered with trencadís mosaics, is one of the most iconic elements. The top part features the original roof finished with ceramic pieces reminiscent of an animal’s scales.

Inside, as was common in the residential buildings, he worked extensively on decorating the main floor, the office and living spaces of the Batlló family.

In the lightwell, which crosses through all the floors, Gaudí ensured that the light entered in a uniform manner through the size of the windows and the chromatic hues of the blue tiles.
