Since opening to the public nine years ago, Casa Vicens Gaudí has played an active part in the Festa Major de Gràcia, one of the neighbourhood’s most cherished annual celebrations. This year has been designated Gaudí Year to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. To celebrate the occasion, Casa Vicens is once again taking part in the Festa Major de Gràcia with free family activities in the streets, a 20% discount on admission and its annual special award in the decorated streets competition organised by the Fundació Festa Major de Gràcia.
On Wednesday 19 August, the winners of this year’s competition will be announced in Plaça de la Vila, including the recipient of the special award presented by Casa Vicens Gaudí to the street that has interpreted the chosen theme most creatively. As part of the prize, the winning street’s organisers will be invited to enjoy a special visit to Casa Vicens, the UNESCO World Heritage Site on Carrer de les Carolines.
20% off admission
From August 15 to 21, visitors can enjoy 20% off self-guided and guided tours by using the promotional code FMGRACIA when booking online at casavicens.org. Throughout the same period, the guided tour in Catalan will continue to be available at the special price of €12. Casa Vicens Gaudí will remain open every day throughout the Festa Major, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Free family workshops in the streets of Gràcia
As it does every year, Casa Vicens Gaudí is once again taking part in the Festa Major by bringing a free family workshop to the streets of Gràcia. Participants will be able to make their own game of noughts and crosses, decorating the playing pieces with the house’s iconic carnation motif and distinctive chimneys.
The exterior of Casa Vicens is clad in ceramic tiles featuring carnations. According to Joan Bergós, one of Gaudí’s earliest biographers, the architect found these flowers growing on the site before construction began and adopted them as the decorative motif for the building’s ceramic work. The chimneys that crown the house, with their distinctive white-and-green chequerboard tiles, have likewise become one of the most recognisable features of Carrer de les Carolines.
The workshops will take place from August 15 to 21, with two sessions each day at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., at locations across the neighbourhood including Carrer del Progrés, Carrer de Mozart, Carrer de Tordera, Carrer de Joan Blanques de Baix, Plaça de la Vila and Carrer de la Providència. No advance booking is required. Visitors are encouraged to check the Festa Major programme for workshop locations and times, and to follow @casavicens on Instagram for the latest daily updates.
