1908-1914
Eusebi Güell owned a textile company in the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló. To offer his employees the highest standard of living, he enlisted numerous architects for the construction of different spaces.
He entrusted Gaudí with the construction of the church without any limits or conditions.
Construction ground to a halt in 1914 due to unknown reasons. Only the lower nave and the portico managed to be built. This space became known as the crypt, even though it is not underground. Nevertheless, thanks to the photographs of the polyfunicular model, we can get a glimpse of the idea that Gaudí had for this two-storey church with catenary arches inside.
