Casa Vicens

1883-1885

Casa Vicens was built in Vila de Gràcia as the summer home for the currency trader and stockbroker Manel Vicens and his wife Dolors Giralt.

This building was the first large commission that Gaudí received as an architect, at the tender of age of 30.

The house is a work ahead of its time, a precursor of the Modernisme that would explode 20 years later in other buildings he created. Casa Vicens includes structural solutions and decorative and symbolic elements that would end up defining Gaudí’s architectural language.

After more than a century of being held in private hands, the first house designed by Gaudí opened its doors to the public in 2017. Today this Unesco World Heritage Site is an ideal location to learn about and understand Gaudí’s architectural journey.
